To date, their projects
have encompassed a diverse range of films, documentaries,
comedies, dramas and animation. Currently they are seeking
funding from "various pots of money" in order to make
a feature film based on growing up in Cornwall, a topic
all of them can address from first-hand experience.
Previously involved
in theatre, the three have found that o-region has allowed
them a wide remit, with scope for original work as well
as collaborating with other emerging filmmakers, among
them Mark Jenkins. A writer and director in his own
right, Jenkins was the winner of the 2002 Celtic Film
Festival.
In 2003, in an effort
to create the kind of film 'scene' they felt has been
lacking in Cornwall, the three founded Roughcut, a monthly
film night held in Bar 200, Truro. Initially, Roughcut
showcased O-region's own films. It now has an open submission
policy and features films by a range of innovative writers
and directors. The screenings at Bar 200 have an enthusiastic
following, so enthusiastic infact that Roughcut is planning
to launch its own film competition: "The 90 Second Film
Challenge." Full details of the competition can be found
on their web site. The closing date is in April '04.
Harvey, Berry and Grose
hope that in the future they will be able to take Roughcut
to other locations in Cornwall. They would also like
to make a start on their feature film. Much depend on
funding. The cost of hiring a studio such as the purpose
built film studio in St.Agnes, is, somewhat ironically,
prohibitive to all those actually working in film in
Cornwall. There is also concern that funding for Cornish
film companies such as o-region will disappear when
and if the Objective One money provided for Cornwall
Film is withdrawn. Nevertheless, Harvey, Berry and Grose
continue to pursue projects for o-region and run Roughcut
without taking a wage, preferring a demanding work load
and low pay to a loss of autonomy and creative control.
