The exhibition was also unusual in that
it represented a successful effort by locally-based
artists to show their work in conditions of their own
choice.
This project was born from Miles Henderson-Smith's
desire to challenge the conventional land- and seascape
painting that has so long dominated visual art in Cornwall.
Smith describes a sense of resignation among young artists
in Cornwall, who feel that they have no reason to stay
in the area after completing their degrees. They cite
a lack of opportunities, an absence of response or dialogue
about the kind of work they are producing. This is exactly
the problem that prompted Henderson-Smith to get together
with like-minded artists and set up the Falmouth Arts
Projects. This organization managed to enlist financial
support with the help of Creative Kernow and the Creative
Skills Consortium.
"House," which featured work by Nick Williams,
Lucy Willow, Georgina Kennedy, Jessica Jones, and Rosalind
Bayley, as well as Henderson-Smith, was a striking success,
drawing 150 on opening night. These artists, who set
up the Falmouth Arts Projects organization, appear to
have forged opportunities for themselves where many
other young artists have claimed that there are none.
But are such initiatives enough to sustain a vibrant
and growing new arts "scene" in Cornwall? Henderson-Smith
seems adamant that artists need to create their own
opportunities, rather than waiting for chances to come
to them. He himself continues to have financial difficulties,
however, and at this point is unsure whether he will
stay in Cornwall.
