Contributers General Brief; Living by the Sea: Told in Pictures and Stories by Those Who Do. This exciting exhibition explores the experience of living by the sea in words, pictures, shapes, textures and colours through the eyes of children and the memories and thoughts of local people. It is a community project that draws together the combined creativity and expertise of students from Falmouth College of Arts, the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, local schools and community groups, and provides an opportunity for people to work together and exchange ideas about what it is that makes living by the sea so distinctive. The exhibition touches on a wide range of debates, from children exploring the beach to the harsh and demanding experience of the sea for those whose livelihood depends on it. The main aim of the project is to bring people together and provide them with an opportunity to make an exhibition about themselves, and for themselves.
· BA(Hons) Spatial Design: Interior & Landscape & BA(Hons) 3D Design for Sustainability BA (Hons) Spatial Design and BA (Hons) 3D Design for Sustainability have been working together with the intention of creating an exciting exhibition environment that will, in a cohesive way, compliment the work produced in workshops run by other Falmouth BA (Hons) programmes. The Spatial and 3D Design for Sustainability programmes are also running a series of workshops where the aim is to inform and encourage children to be more aware of their environment. Three large boards will be produced, each with an iconic image representing the sea. The workshops will focus on the theme of water and the surrounding land to generate awareness of environmental issues through the themes of 'reduce, recycle and reuse'. The children will also be encouraged to keep a journal of the whole process, and this will be displayed as part of the exhibition.
· BA(Hons) Photography BA (Hons) Photography are running a workshop series in which children have the opportunity, through photographs and journals, to explore environmental issues related to living by the sea. Focussing on the relationship of air, water and earth, children will be encouraged to express their thoughts and responses through the medium of photography. They will also address and explore their concern for their surroundings. The final exhibit will be an installation that conveys their exploration in relation to the environment. The journals they have created will also be on display.
· BA(Hons) Textile Design The BA (Hons) Textiles students are running a series of workshops at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. Using seaside motifs for inspiration, children will produce drawings that reflect their own experience of living by the sea. The emphasis is on the use of bold colours and shapes in their illustrations to capture the theme of boats, sailing and the harbour front. With Textiles students acting as facilitators and technicians, children will be encouraged to engage in a process of abstraction, thus producing designs for fabric banners to be hung in the Museum. BA (Hons) 3D and Spatial students will helping to install the banners from the balconies at the Museum in a style which evokes the sail.
· BA(Hons) Broadcasting BA (Hons) Broadcasting will create an atmospheric audio journey featuring sound bites from around the sea and interviews with people whose lives revolve around the ocean. They will collaborate with other College departments involved with the exhibition to produce a soundscape audio presentation, which will create an unobtrusive environment as an accompaniment to rest of the exhibition. They intend to create an honest portrayal of life by the sea and to give an insight into different aspects of maritime experience. The finished piece will consist of a 30-45 minute audio production.
· BA(Hons) History of Modern Art & Design Web site coordination, design and production. This Project is supported by Falmouth College of Arts, the Higher Education Active Community Fund and the National Maritime Museum, Cornwall.
